Great coach Zidane has surprised me – Marcelo

The Real Madrid defender says he has been impressed with the former France international’s ability to communicate with the players

Real Madrid defender Marcelo says he has been surprised at how quickly Zinedine Zidane has proved himself to be a great coach.

Former World Player of the Year Zidane took up his first senior coaching role when promoted from Real Madrid’s B team last year following the dismissal of Rafa Benitez.

Zizou instantly led Madrid to the club’s 11th UEFA Champions League crown and Brazil international Marcelo has been particularly impressed with the former France international’s ability to communicate with the players.

“He’s a great person who really understands the players. In a short space of time he’s proved his talent as a coach. He’s a winning coach,” Marcelo told the official UEFA Super Cup matchday programme.

“But the thing that has surprised me the most is how calm he is when he explains things.”

Zidane and Marcelo will be seeking another major UEFA title on Tuesday when they meet Europa League-winners Sevilla at the Lerkendal Stadion in Norway.

And Marcelo says victory over their La Liga rivals would be the perfect way to kick off the new season.

“It would be fantastic for all Real Madrid fans if we could start the season by winning the Super Cup,” he said.

“It’s the first competition of the season and the teams are still gelling at that point. It’s been a very busy summer for many Real Madrid players but we’re still going to give everything to win the trophy and make our fans happy.”
