Uk Government Creates Opportunity For Young Nigerians


– The UK Chevening scholarships application window for the 2017/2018 is now on for young Nigerians who have strong academic backgrounds

– Chevening began in the year 1983 and has developed into a prestigious international awards schemes

– There are over 46,000 Chevening Alumni around the world who comprise an influential and highly regarded global network

The United Kingdom Government’s global scholarship programme has announced the opening and application of its 2017/2018 Chevening scholarships scheme via www.chevening.org/apply which kicked off from August 8 to November 8 2016.

Chevening scholarships are the United Kingdom Government’s overseas scholarships which is being awarded to individuals with demonstrable leadership potential who also have strong academic backgrounds.

Interestingly, the scholarship scheme also offers financial support for individuals to study for a master’s degree at any United Kingdom university coupled with the opportunity to become part of an influential global network of 46,000 alumni.

The call for the new applicants follows the selection of 53 scholars from Nigeria who won an award to study at a UK university this year.

There are also more than 1, 500 Chevening scholarships on offer globally for the 2017/2018 academic cycle which will represent a significant investment from the UK Government to develop the next cohort of global leaders.

In a statement made available to NAIJ.com, the British Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright revealed how elated he is to have announced the opening of Chevening scholarship scheme.

“I am delighted to announce the opening of Chevening scholarship programme for the 2016/2017 academic year, and those who are selected for a Chevening scholarship become recognised as leaders belonging to a global network of influencers.

“They are also empowered with a strong sense of pride and responsibility and I call on young Nigerians looking to make a positive impact on their country and to further deepen the strong ties between the UK and Nigeria.

“I want then to take advantage of this opportunity and apply to become Chevening scholars.

“The UK is home to many of the world’s best universities, and Chevening enables you to develop academically, professionally, and personally whilst studying in the UK,” Paul Arkwright said.

More than 1,000 Nigerians have benefited from Chevening scholarship since the first award in 1983 in which many of them have moved on to establish successful careers in the media, military, security services, business and government.

Amongst some Nigerians who have benefited from the Chevening scholars are John Momoh who is the MD of Channels TV, Mohammed Babandede who is the Comptroller General of Immigration and also the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

Meanwhile, those who are selected for a Chevening scholarship become recognised as leaders belonging to a global network of influencers as they are empowered with a strong sense of pride and responsibility.
